Cleaning/Dusting: Use soft cloth dampened with water or mild
furniture cleaner (Orange Oil is one we recommend). Clean/dust
frequently (once a week is recommended).
Waxes: Avoid wax-based cleaning products; they are
not necessary. The wax in these products can build and yellow
the finish, and be difficult to remove.
Harsh chemicals: Never use ammonia, acetone, thinner, or other
harsh chemicals to clean. If you have to wear gloves, it’s the
wrong cleaner and may damage/destroy the finish.
Sunlight: Protect furniture from direct sunlight. Ultraviolet
light, a component of sunlight, can damage both the finish
and the underlying wood.
“Tanning”: Objects placed atop furniture (e.g., lamps, books)
should be moved occasionally. Wood “tans” (color-ages) over
time with light exposure. “Un-tanned” areas eventually catch up
to surrounding tones.
Scratches/Marks: Light scratching is unavoidable
over time. Consult a cabinetmaker for help in dealing with more serious
mars. Some damaged finishes may be repaired easily; others
may require
refinishing.
Moving: Lift, move, set down; avoid sliding heavy furniture,
especially over carpets. Blanket-wrap and secure with straps
for vehicle transport.
Heat and Humidity: Sudden and/or extreme temperature and humidity
swings can harm fine wood furniture. Avoid placing furniture
by ducts/vents. If possible, keep temperature between 65-70, humidity
near 35 percent.
